Good lighting is truly everything in your home! Lighting will affect the ambiance and mood of a space, if you get it right then the whole room will look improved. Here are some tips on how to create a well-lighted home.
It is important to know your ceiling height when selecting hanging light fixtures as some lights come with adjustable cables or rods and then others done. You don’t want to get stuck with a light that hangs too high or too low. The bottom of a light should hang 12 to 20 inches below a standard 8-foot ceiling, for each additional foot of ceiling height you want to add on 3 inches.
If you’re hanging a light over a table or a kitchen, then it is recommended to have 28 to 34 inches of distance from the bottom of the light to the surface of the table or island. The size of the light does make a difference, so a smaller light can be moved lower and a larger light can be moved higher.
In the initial design phase of a new build or renovation, you need to consider your lighting preferences. If you want 3 pendant lights over your table, instead of two then this needs to be considered before construction begins.
Depending on the location, consider wall sconces or uplighting to make a softer ambiance, by doing this you will avoid harsh downlighting that will cast ominous shadows.
A light fixture shouldn’t be your only consideration, as the type of lightbulb that you use is also important. LED and halogen compact fluorescent bulbs come in a range of warm or cool hues, the type of glow you want is a personal decision like the colour of your walls. If you have cooler toned walls, then you want to use a light bulb that has a warm glow.
