10 Steps to Painting Like a Professional

In this blog post we will be giving you 10 steps on how to make your next paint job a smashing success!

Wait for Dry Weather.

Avoid painting on a rainy day as humidity means drips and slow drying! If you have to paint when it is humid take your time and take advantage of slow drying paint to correct errors before you move onto the next coat. If you overwork this, then it will show when you are finished.

Do a Thorough Visual Inspection and Prep.

If you see any cracked, flaking or peeling areas then these will need to be lightly sanded or scraped before applying primer and paint. This is because the weight of the new coat will pull the paint loose. If you find any greasy spot then these might need washing with soap and then rinsed with clean water, otherwise give the walls a quick wipe down with a damp cloth, this will make sure the paint has a clean and dust free surface to stick to.

Buy High-Quality Brushes, Roller Covers and Painters Tape.

If you are spending a lot of money on paint, then you definitely need to spend the same amount on your paint brushes and other forms of application. If you buy good brushes and roller covers then they will give you excellent coverage so that you don’t need to waste time and paint on re-application. If you buy high-end painter tape, then it will do a better job of sealing out drips and blurs.

Know your Nap.

The more texture on your walls the thick the nap you will need on your roller cover, you’ll need it to be thicker, so it can reach into crevices and give complete coverage. If you go too thick, however, you might create texture where you don’t want it so make sure you give a lot of details when explaining to us what you are painting!

Protect Anything You Don’t Want Painted.

You should always spend time covering floors, furniture and hardware before you begin any paint project because you don’t want it to messy! Drop cloths are a must and small plastic sandwich bags are a good idea to protect doorknobs.

Remove Light Switch and Outlet Covers.

To achieve a cleaner look, you should always remove light switches and outlet covers. This only takes 5 minutes and you shouldn’t skip it!

Use Primer.

If you already have a clean and smooth surface, then paint and primer combinations are fine. If there are any issues with the wall or if it has been longer than 8 years since you have last painted, you should consider a separate primer. Use a bonding primer if you are covering a glass or high-gloss paint.

Box Your Paint.

We can help you find out an estimate of how much paint you will need so you can buy it all at once. Instead of using one gallon at a time then you can combine all the paint you need into one large container and then mix it thoroughly. This is known as “boxing” your paint and it keeps it consistent from the start to the finish.

Let the Roller Do the Work.

You won’t need to use much pressure when rolling paint if you have already chosen a good roller cover and you have premium paints, as they flow on easily. You can also use an extension pole, so you can reach the maximum amount of the area.

Paint from Top to Bottom.

Once you have cut into your edges at the ceilings and baseboards use a roller and apply the paint from the ceilings downward. Amateurs will often have drips and splatters once they have finished but pros will paint over their mistakes as they work their way down the wall. It is best to leave an area alone once it starts to dry as going back over it can leave marks and colour streaks in the paint.
