7 Ways to Keep Your House Warm This Christmas

We understand that Christmas is an expensive time of year. Whilst the weather is getting colder and colder, we only want to turn our heating up on full. However, this will send your energy bills up the chimney. We’ve therefore composed our 10 top tips to keep your house warm this Christmas whilst saving your all-important money at the same time.

1. Use your curtains

Heat from the sun is completely free, it’s time to start making the most of it! Open your curtains and let the sun light in during the day, and when it gets dark, simply close your curtains in order to act as a layer of insulation.

2. Use Timers on your central heating

You should programme your boiler to turn on 30 minutes before you get up in the morning, but at a low temperature, and by the time you need it, it will be a perfect temperature, then have the timer set so it’s of while everyone’s out the house and again comes on just before you return home to use it.

3. Move Your Sofa

We know you like to keep your sofa in front of the radiator so it’s nice and toasty when you sit down. However, this will only absorb the heat that could be warming your home. Move your sofa away and allow the heat to freely circulate.

4. Maximise Insulation

Around 24% of all heat is lost through the roof. This can be easily reduced through installing 25cm of installation throughout your loft.

5. Wrap up warm

If you have a hot water tank, make sure it is properly lagged or insulated. This will keep the water warmer for a longer period. This will help reduce heating costs and could save up to £150 a year.

6. Turn down the dial

Research shows that turning your thermostat down by 1°C can cut your heating bill by up to 10%. 18°C is the recommended minimum living standard for your living room.

7. Reflect the Heat

Radiator panels are relatively cheap and easy to install. They ensure that the heat from your radiators warms up your room, not your walls. They work by reflecting the heat back into the room.
